We Were Made For This

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. - Genesis 1: 27-31

In the day-to-day of parenting it's easy to forget that, if we're parents, God made us for this. From infants who interrupt our sleep and fill the house with diapers, to teenagers who ask difficult questions and stretch the limits of their autonomy: parenting can feel like an overwhelming task.

In Genesis 1 we're reminded that none of these challenges takes God by surprise. He made mankind to be fruitful and multiply and so when he gives you a child, he doesn't leave you to you own power and wisdom to get the job done well. He will supply everthing we need to do faithfully what he has called us to do.

There's a lot we need more of as parents: patience, wisdom, humility, grace, forgiveness, and certainly love. In those times when you're feeling like you lack all of them, find a comforting reminder in the knowledge that God made you for this, he called you to this, and you can do all things through him (Phil 4:13).
