Verse 8 - You're Talking to Yourself

It's good to think more deeply about the mercies of God in times of crisis. To help guide us in this effort, we'll consider Paul David Tripp's collection of meditations from Psalm 27 called "A Shelter in the Time of Storm." You can get your own copy on Amazon here.

My heart says to you,
"Your face, Lord, do I seek."

Psalm 27:8

As he suspected, Tripp's common refrain to his friends did make me laugh:

"...no one is more influential in your life than you are, because no one talks to you more than you do."

But he's right. Whether or not you verbalize this internal monologue, we're all "talking" to ourselves as we process the world around us. We explain our own behaviors and (attempt to) those of others around us. We process feelings. We coach ourselves up or talk ourselves into/out of words and actions.

In Psalm 27, we are (invited) eavesdroppers on David's internal conversation. He gives himself very good advice: seek God rather than flee from him in times of trouble.

This is one reason why it's so helpful to memorize Scripture, as well as catechisms, creeds, great songs, hymns, and spiritual songs. When our internal monologue kicks in, telling us what to do and influencing our perspective, we want our minds to be equipped with the words of faith rather than fear.

Questions to Consider

The questions are Tripp's. I included my answers in case they're helpful to read.

1. What are the things that you regularly say to yourself that shape the decision you make, the actions you take, and the words you say?

- "What can you accomplish by worrying about this or fearing it?" "How much of this can you control?" "When has God failed you?" "What is my only comfort in life or in death?" "I am weak, but he is mighty."

2. What are some of the truths from Psalm 27 that you can call to mind as you talk to yourself?

- "The Lord is my light and my salvation." "Whom shall I fear...of whom shall I be afraid?"

- "For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble."

- "I believe I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord..."
